What’s It About?
10 FOR TEENS AND TWEENS "shares tools that empower girls to know they can take on the world" as part of Empowerful Girls, which provides courses, workshops, and other resources. In every episode, host Stephanie Valdez leads listeners in a no-holds-barred discussion of an age-appropriate issue that teen and tween girls may face when navigating adolescence. This includes developing self-love, forming and managing friendships, maintaining a healthy presence online, and empowering body positivity. Each episode is about 10 minutes, which means treatment of these sometimes heavy topics only scratches the surface, but the episodes make for good conversation starters between teens and adults or peers.
Is It Any Good?
10 for Teens and Tweens acts as an advocate and a shoulder to lean on for tween and teen girls going through the often bumpy road of adolescence. This podcast does an admirable job of preparing listeners for what's to come as well as meeting them where they are in their journey of growing up. Host Stephanie Valdez has the knowledge and warmth to deliver even sensitive subjects with reassuring poise. The breadth of discussion topics encompasses practical tips for navigating friendships, relationships, and puberty as well as guidance on the importance of self-love and developing self-awareness about one's own needs and emotions. This includes knowing when to let friendships go and when it's time to apologize.
10 for Teens and Tweens refuses to shy away from topics some adults might be hesitant to address with their kids, but that's precisely why it's so necessary. The show challenges the notion of what's "appropriate" to discuss with girls, serving as a resource to help them prepare for life. At the very least, the show asks girls and their trusted adults to consider when the time is right to have difficult conversations. And in the process, 10 for Teens and Tweens unearths a number of unspoken topics that, if raised at the right time, can offer young people a deeper discussion within themselves, with adults, and with their peers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how 10 for Teens and Tweens presents concentrated guidance for listeners in 10-minute chunks. Is this enough time to effectively cover a given topic, especially since these topics are often complex and important? Why, or why not?
10 for Teens and Tweens aims to empower girls to know their worth, navigate their adolescence, and confidently enter adulthood. How could the show improve upon this mission going forward? What's some advice you'd give your younger self?
This podcast demonstrates compassion, empathy, and communication. Why are these important character strengths when it comes to navigating tween and teen years?
Activity idea: Teens and adults, try listening to an episode together. Have an honest discussion about the topic addressed in the episode. Adults can give their perspective from their experience of when they were teens. Teens can give their perspective as a current teen in today's world. Practice active listening, empathy, and understanding.
