What’s It About?
In the podcast series ADVENTURES OF CAIRO, we follow the joyful day-to-day life of Cairo Jackson, a Black 7-year-old who lives in the city with his parents and older brother, Omari. Most of the episodes take place at school or at home, and Cairo is joined by a multicultural group of friends and neighbors. In each episode Cairo learns an important life lesson, like being true to yourself, understanding the value of a dollar, or sticking up for your friends. Cairo is a very friendly and good-natured kid, but like all young children he still has a lot to learn about personal responsibility and other social-emotional skills. He often gets there through learning from mistakes, taking advice from his family, and problem-solving with his friends.
Is It Any Good?
This is a well-written podcast with relatable characters and realistic situations, and it's sure to appeal to the target audience. Young listeners of Adventures of Cairo will be able to empathize with Cairo as he spends some of his field trip money on glitter slime, or when he nervously joins classmates laughing at his friend so that he doesn't get bullied himself. At the same time, they'll hear how Cairo reflects on his decisions and learns from his mistakes. The exceptional voice actors bring the characters to life, and adults listening along will be entertained as well.
Children and families seeking shows with Black lead characters and cultural representation will find a lot to love about this podcast. Cairo's family is warm and loving, and the stories portray diverse city life in a very positive light. Characters do confront stereotypes and talk about the dangers of judging people by how they speak or look. Cairo has friends of various racial and economic backgrounds. It's rare to find a podcast with this level of representation, in addition to the right amount of humor and heart.
