What's the Story?
ALL RISE: THE STORY OF KETANJI BROWN JACKSON explores the life story of Ketanji Brown Jackson, and how rising above obstacles has been a constant in her life. Ketanji was born into a family that had great hopes for her future and valued education and equality. She was taught that if she worked hard and believed in herself, she could do anything. She never forgot that lesson. Despite major academic accomplishments, people doubted and mocked Ketanji because of the color of her skin and her African name. She proved them all wrong when she attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School, never forgetting to protest for equal rights. Eventually, she reached her goal of becoming a federal judge, but then she thought of a greater dream. In 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to become an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. After enduring difficult Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, she persevered and became the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court on June 30, 2022.
Is It Any Good?
This is an inspiring story for all readers, especially young children with big dreams. All Rise: The Story of Ketanji Brown Jackson shares the lesson, "[...] in America, anything is possible." Despite a 232 year history, a Black woman had never served on the Supreme Court of the United States. When Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was elected, it was symbol of hope for everyone who looks like her.
The book's realistic illustrations capture the character's emotions and engage readers. Ketanji's story of perseverance and constant pursuit of equality is relatable, and presented in a way that young children can understand.
