Positive Role Models
a little
The bakers in this competition are surprisingly supportive of each other, quickly gelling into a group who care about each other. The hosts and judges are gentle but effective in their critiques.
Diverse Representations
a little
Though the two hosts are White, the contestants and one of the judges are a diverse group of Asian, Latino, Black, and mixed individuals. Both men and women excel in their roles.
Parents need to know that Blue Ribbon Baking Championship is a baking competition reality show hosted by cooking show host Sandra Lee and Jason Biggs (of the raunchy American Pie movies). Though a couple of references to the American Pie movies will sail over younger kids' heads (Biggs quietly comments at one point that a pie looks attractive to him), older teens and adults probably will understand that this host became famous for playing a movie character who has intercourse with a pie. If families feel that these references, which are few in the baking show, aren't of concern, then this otherwise wholesome baking show is fine to watch. Perseverance and humility are character strengths that the bakers exhibit as they compete. Language includes "damn" and "hell."

What's the Story?
In the BLUE RIBBON BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP, contestants are asked to make desserts that are inspired by the state fairs found across the U.S. Bakers create pies, cakes, and other goodies in the tradition of these fairs, leaning on the recipes that have been handed down to them as well as the innovations they've drummed up. Hosts Sandra Lee and Jason Biggs bring in judges to decide who will win the coveted blue ribbon for each competition, and who will ultimately win the $100,000 prize.
As a folksy and colorful baking competition that runs with the small-town tradition of baking for state fairs, this competition sticks to a formula. Though the production flows smoothly and the hosts and judges are showbiz ready, there's not the intimacy or skill in Blue Ribbon Baking Championship that its inspiration, The Great British Baking Show, touts.
Families who bake together can enjoy this show, but be aware that one of the hosts starred in a sexually raunchy movie series about dirty things done to pies. Was that intentional casting? Co-host Jason Biggs exudes circus-tent charm in his candy-colored suits, and mostly shrugs off references to the smutty hit movies, but for those in the know, it can be an elephant in the room. For those who don't know -- or don't care -- this show can pass as a standard baking competition.
