What’s It About?

In CATS: CRASH ARENA TURBO STARS, you have to build a fighting machine and then use it to attack other people's fighting machines in an arena. Oh, and you're a cat for some reason. But while this does have some narrative elements, it doesn't really have a story. Sure, you interact with an uncle -- who's an even bigger Italian stereotype than Mario -- but there's no real plot driving the action, only the desire to be the best cat piloting a fighting machine that you can be.

While this has cat-controlled machines duking it out, this fun game is really more for passive people who like to build and watch than be hands-on. In CATS: Crash Arena Turbo Stars, you construct a fighting machine and then watch as it battles other people's fighting machines. But while there's a cat driving these battle bots, and you're supposed to be the cat, you don't control the machine yourself. Instead, you just build your machine out of parts you earn from fighting and then sit back and enjoy the show -- or don't, as the case may be, because while this may be fun for people who enjoy watching other people do their dirty work, those who are more hands-on, especially when it comes to fighting games, will find this gets tiresome after a bit. This is especially because some of these battle machines have a tendency to flip onto their backs like drunk turtles and then just lie there, flailing around until the barriers close in from the sides and destroy them. But if you're more passive or just like building things and seeing them work, CATS: Crash Arena Turbo Stars is surprisingly fun and engaging, especially when you get yourself a really elaborate battle bot.

  • Families can talk about violence in video games. Because this game has fighting machines duking it out, there's no blood or gore, but does that make you feel differently about the fact that they're fighting? And that they're fighting for sport, not for something noble?

  • Talk about combat and cuteness. Does it make you feel any differently that the fighters in this game are cats, as opposed to people? Or dogs? Or something that isn't cute? Why do you think that is?

  • Discuss budgeting money. While spending money on this game supports the developers and can help you upgrade your fighting machine, how much is too much to spend on this game?
