Mature and disturbing exploration wanting control and to be controlled
The film marks a significant tonal shift from Lanthimos' recent work, Poor Things, returning to the hostile atmosphere of his earlier films. It ambitiously and forcibly blends cruelty with desert-dry comedy, exploring the tension between the desire for control and the compulsion to be controlled and loved, often by an abusive figure masking cruelty as kindness. The events and related themes are depicted violently, but also very bluntly, akin to how Beau Is Afraid serves as a nightmare-like metaphor for parental dependency. Despite the slow gradual build-up of absurdity, the film maintains a clear thematic focus throughout its lengthy runtime.
Kinds of Kindness is captivating but understandably divisive, with an aggressive, disturbing atmosphere that may be off-putting to some. If you're sensitive to graphic violence and self-harm, gore, or (albeit brief) explicit sexual content, this film may not be for you.
