What’s It About?
Cocoon - A Space for Family is a social media platform for a small group -- up to six people on iOS devices. Within your cocoon, you can share photos and status updates just as you do on broader social media platforms. Since this is a smaller, more intimate group -- likely family -- you may elect to share more personal information like your location, including real-time changes, and daily steps. Push notifications are silent, so they won't interrupt your day but can be viewed whenever you pick up your phone. Location data can be specific or city-level or turned off.
Is It Any Good?
Created by former Facebook employees, this micro-social-media platform allows families or small groups to easily share information in a controlled environment. At the time of review, it's missing a few necessities, like an Android version and the option to join multiple cocoons. Users have the option to share location data, which could get overwhelming, especially for kids seeing all of their parents' comings and goings, though some parents would likely want to see that information for their kids. All of that can be controlled in settings. Group size is limited to six, too, which is great for most immediate families but makes extended family groups impossible. With a few more features, this app could be an awesome all-in-one app for families rather than piecemeal group text and location-tracking software.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can use Cocoon - A Space for Family to share location and news throughout the day. Use the information shared to enhance conversation face-to-face rather than eliminate it.
Take advantage of the small, family-focused group to model appropriate social media conversations through comments. Discuss how tone can't be read in a text and how messages can be received in different ways.
