What's the Story?
I AM AMAZING! begins with main character Ayaan happily playing during recess, using the super speed and super strength that he believes his cape gives him. But when he overhears other students laughing at him because he "can't be a real superhero" since he doesn't look like one, he's crushed. When he comes home sad, his dad knows something is wrong. Ayaan packs away his cape, saying that he's not a superhero anymore. His father explains to him that superheroes come in all different shapes and sizes and have different roles in the community. Ayaan ultimately recognizes why he really is amazing, like a superhero, and he's empowered to keep being super.
Is It Any Good?
This story is a beautiful read for both young children and their parents. I Am Amazing! is a wonderful continuation of the I Am Smart, I Am Blessed, I Can Do Anything! story, and it reminds readers that there really are superheroes among us. Artist Nnneka Myers portrays the characters' emotions with beautiful illustrations. And the story explores how positive thoughts, a loving support system, and appreciation for others can help make everything better.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how, in I Am Amazing!, Ayaan sees himself as a superhero and calls himself "Amazing Ayaan." What would your superhero name be?
Why do you think David and Brian laughed at Ayaan and told him he wasn't a real superhero?
Who is a superhero in your community? Who is a superhero in your school? Who is a superhero in your family? Why do you think these people are superheroes?
