My tween is still really frightened by scary stuff in movies. Should I be concerned?

Although some kids this age might start seeking out scary content looking for thrills, there's nothing wrong with 8- to 9-year-olds who dislike it. The ability to handle violence and scary stuff comes in time and shouldn't be forced.

Not all scary stuff is the same, though. Around age 8 is when kids can deal with the beginnings of emotional conflict -- such as the loss of a pet or divorce -- but scenes of anger, bullying, loyalty, and moral issues all should show resolution. Realistic scary situations may be the most frightening. Though they might try to seem like big kids, tweens still need to be reassured that they're safe.
