What’s It About?
ROLLERCOASTER TYCOON TOUCH, the 2017 installment of the Atari-produced theme park-building game, was created for touch-based devices. Kids complete missions to get card packs, which let them place buildings and seven types of roller coasters in the park; they also get coins and tickets, which can help them complete future missions and add amenities more quickly. The app also encourages users to pay attention to the park's patrons, called Peeps, and to how their needs affect business.
Is It Any Good?
This simulation is a fun ride that should keep sim fans entertained for hours and hours. The app's missions provide constant goals, progress can be made pretty quickly, and a helpful guide pops up now and again to let you know you've reached a new level or should be taking a certain action. Once you've earned enough cards, you can choose the location for place the corresponding building and track its affect on the theme park and the park's overall progress to ensure it becomes a successful business.
For a seemingly just-for-kicks game, the app features a few above-average learning elements, such as the ability to lower the admission price to boost attendance and upgrade cards to make buildings more efficient so more people are allowed inside. Features like that can provide an interesting experience for kids who haven't had much exposure to business principles, particularly if parents are involved to offer more insight. Activity doesn't slow down much, which should keep players interested in using the app repeatedly. After tracking their earnings and the development dollars they want to spend, they may walk away with a deeper understanding of how a company is run or at least a slightly stronger sense of money management, if they're given some additional instruction. But even without it, players are likely to have a good time constructing their coasters and the surrounding facilities.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what's involved in running a business. How many tasks, such as keeping track of money and keeping customers happy, can you identify in the game? Which seem to be the most important, in regard to the park's success?
The game encourages you to pay attention to park guests' needs, ranging from hunger to having to go to the bathroom, which can be a starting point for a discussion about being sensitive to other people's feelings. How can you assess how people are feeling? What's a kind way to react if they're upset?
RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch is free, but there are several chances when playing to buy extra items to help you make more progress. Do you feel like purchasing them would make the game more fun? Can you come up with a few things that cost no money to do that are fun?
