What's the Story?
SATURDAYS is a show about 14-year-old BFFs that spend their Saturdays roller skating at the local roller rink, Saturdays Rockin' Roller Palace. Three best friends Paris (Danielle Jalade), Ari (Peyton Basnight), and Simone (Daria Johns) have christened themselves the "We-B-Girlz" skate crew. They spend their weekends at the rink, rocking out to tunes spun by Paris's brother DJ London and his friend Derek. When she's not at the rink, main character Paris hangs out with her goofy but loving parents (Omar Gooding, Golden Brooks). Each episode follows them navigating a problem like being too young to appear in a music video being filmed at the rink, or London calling out Paris's wedgie over the PA system at Saturdays. While the We-B-Girls may have some minor arguments, they know that they always have each other's backs in the end.
Is It Any Good?
Kids into fashion, music, and performance will find this sitcom irresistible. The teen characters in Saturdays manage to feel both super cool but also incredibly wholesome and relatable. Saturdays also fills a gap in TV representation, since there have not been many kid-friendly sitcoms with an all-Black cast since the That's So Raven/Sister Sister/Smart Guy era of the 1990s and 2000s. While it does leave behind the laugh track and corny dialogue of that era, Saturdays does rely on some cliched sitcom tropes (like parents always talking about losing "pandemic pounds"). Kids and tweens won't mind; they'll be too busy wishing they could go skating with the teens at Saturdays.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Paris, Ari, and Simone support each other in Saturdays. How are they good friends to one another? How do you support the friends in your life?
Families can talk about the all-Black cast in Saturdays. There aren't many kids' shows on TV right now with so many Black characters. Why do you think that's true? Why do you think it's important to have a cast like this one?
