What's the Story?
In SOFIA VALDEZ, FUTURE PREZ, young Sofia is prompted to take action to clean up a local landfill when her loving abuelo is hurt while they’re out helping their neighbors. She decides to turn the dump into a park, but when she visits City Hall, everyone tells her she can’t get that done because she’s just a kid. Sofia refuses to take no for an answer and shows the world that second-graders should be taken seriously when they talk, especially when they say they want to make a difference in the world.
Is It Any Good?
This charming book about kid activism delivers the powerful message that that no one should be told they can’t accomplish something just because they’re young. There's a nice rhythm to Andrea Beaty's words as they wind around David Roberts' engaging illustrations in Sofia Valdez, Future Prez. Young readers will enjoy that they have to turn the book all around to follow the sentences snaking through the pages. More advanced readers will be challenged by the vocabulary and the concentration it takes to read that way at a steady pace.
