Unlocked: A Jail Experiment

What's the Story?
UNLOCKED: A JAIL EXPERIMENT is an eight-part docuseries that follows inmates in an Arkansas county jail as they're given more freedom outside of their cells to see how they behave. Sheriff Eric Higgins runs the Pulaski County Jail in Little Rock, Arkansas, where inmates are held in cells for 23 hours a day. In an effort to help male inmates understand that they can have better lives if they can behave appropriately in free society, he implements a six-week trial period that will keep the cells in H-unit unlocked 24/7, and station the corrections officers outside the pod. For the doors to remain open during this time period, the men must follow the rules, support each other, and work as a community. If they cannot, the experiment ends immediately. But H-unit houses the most dangerous inmates awaiting trial or post-sentencing transfer, which raises safety concerns among the jail staff. The dangers associated with the experiment are also highlighted by the personal stories shared by the inmates, many of whom are violent or career criminals. Keeping the doors open doesn't automatically eliminate the inmates' social hierarchies, drug habits, or aggressive behaviors, but Sheriff Higgins has faith that these inmates can make it work, and implement the open door policy long term. He also hopes that if folks in H unit can succeed at the exercise, it will lead to similar changes in other units.
Is It Any Good?
The compelling docuseries showcases the efforts of an Arkansas sheriff to help rehabilitate inmates by offering them the opportunity to experience a sense of agency. Unlocked: A Jail Experiment notes how forcing inmates to spend most of their days locked in cells creates pent-up energy, which can quickly deteriorate into aggressive behaviors once the doors are open and lead to lockdowns. Inmates then don't learn how to function appropriately in a more independent community setting.
As viewers watch the interactions between inmates before and after the experiment begins, they can judge for themselves if it's leading to constructive changes in their attitudes and behaviors or creating more problems. But while the efforts being made to help the inmates featured here are positive, Unlocked: A Jail Experiment is pretty rough, and not for the faint of heart. Nonetheless, it raises some thoughtful questions about prison reform, and gives the chance to see what can happen when actions are taken to help inmates behind bars to build the skills necessary to live a free life.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about prison reform. Does rehabilitating inmates while they're behind bars lessen the punishment they're receiving? Can it benefit society at large, even when an inmate will never go free?
Is the experiment featured in Unlocked: A Jail Experiment successful? Is Sheriff Higgins' decision at the end of the six weeks the correct one?
